My favorite word is ‘family.’

‘When they had prepared’
Ether 6:4
The Jaredites had many questions before starting their journey to the land of promise.
Praying to Heavenly Father was the key they used to unlock answers.
Their first questions were easy because all they had to do was receive blessings.
They prayed to Heavenly Father and were blessed to keep the same language.
They prayed to Heavenly Father and were blessed to stay together.
They prayed to Heavenly Father and were blessed with a safe place in the wilderness.
But then, the blessings became harder to earn.
They prayed to Heavenly Father to lead them to a land of promise.
Heavenly Father could have ‘poofed’ the Jaredites to the land of promise with his power, but He didn’t. The blessings of a land of promise would require the Jaredites to do a lot of work!
They prayed to Heavenly Father and were blessed to learn about building barges.
They prayed to Heavenly Father and were blessed with ideas and actions to take for receiving air and light in the barges.
Heavenly Father wanted the Jaredites to learn and grow, and they Did learn and grow, one bit of learning at a time.
When we ask Heavenly Father for blessings, He Can and Will always help us.
The blessings we receive may come with chances to learn from our mistakes or chances to learn about things we didn’t know before.
Praying to Heavenly Father is a key we can always use to unlock answers.
Jesus showed us the way to learn things while He was on earth.
Jesus was already perfect when he came to earth, ‘yet learned he obedience by the things which he suffered.’ (Hebrews 5:8)
’One step at a time’ is our path to become like Jesus.

‘That we may have Light’
Ether 2:19, 2:22-25, 3:1-6, 6:2-5
What was your last problem? Did you solve it?
After eight barges were built and stoppers were put in the tops and bottoms so air could get in, the brother of Jared still had a problem. The brother of Jared prayed, ’. . . O Lord, in (the barges) there is no light; (how) shall we steer? ‘O Lord, wilt thou suffer that we shall cross this great water in darkness?’(Ether 2:19, Ether 3:4)
Well, this time, the Lord answered the brother of Jared’s prayer by asking him a question. ‘What will ye that I should do that ye may have light in your vessels?’ (Ether 3:23,25)
The question helped the brother of Jared think of answers himself!
So, he got an idea and ‘ . . went forth unto the mount, which they called the mount Shelem, because of its exceeding height, and did molten out of a rock sixteen small stones; and they were white and clear, even as transparent glass;’ (Ether 3:1)
Then, the brother of Jared asked the Lord to ‘touch these stones, O Lord, with thy finger, and prepare them that they may shine forth in darkness; and they shall shine forth unto us in the vessels which we have prepared, that we may have light while we shall cross the sea.’ (Ether 3:4)
‘The Lord stretched forth his hand and touched the stones one by one with his finger.’ (Ether 3:6) The brother of Jared put two stones in each barge, one in each end, ‘and behold, they did give light unto the vessels.’ (Ether 6:2-3)
When I have problems or questions, I can ask the Lord for help. He has power and wants to help me when I do my part. (Ether 6:5)

One Problem Leads to Another
Ether 2:18-21
What was your last problem?
After the Jaredites built barges for their trip to the land of promise, new problems came!
The brother of Jared asked the Lord how his people would get light to see and air to breathe while traveling across the sea in barges that were ‘tight like unto a dish.’
Without light and air, the people would die!
The Lord told Jared to make a hole in the tops and bottoms of the barges and put a stopper in each hole. When they needed air, they could ‘unstop the hole and receive air.’
But what about the light? Life on earth depends upon light!

What’s in a Name?
Do you have the same name as someone else? That can be confusing.
The same thing happened in the scriptures.
The name, Mary, belongs to five women in the New Testament:
The name, Nephi, belongs to at least four men in Book of Mormon times.
Moroni is a name shared by two people in the Book of Mormon;
Many people share the same name, but each person is ‘one-of-a-kind.’ Every person is exactly like every other person in two important ways.
Every person has the same Heavenly Father.
And every person is a different child of God.

‘Tight like unto a dish’
Have you counted how long you can hold your breath under water?
The Lord told the brother of Jared to build barges that would carry their families, friends and supplies to the land of promise.
A barge is not a large ship or a small canoe. It’s in-between.
It’s job in the water is to carry goods or people in the easiest way.
The Lord told the Jaredites to build eight barges that were not heavy.
The barges were to be ‘exceedingly tight . . like unto a dish.’
The bottom of the barges were to be ‘tight like unto a dish.’
The sides of the barges were to be ‘tight like unto a dish.’
The ends of the barges were to be ‘peaked,’ which means pointed.
The tops of the barges were to be ‘tight like unto a dish.’
The length of each barge was to be as long as a tree.
The door was to be ‘tight like unto a dish’ when it was shut.
Why do you think the Lord reminded the Jaredites five times to build parts of the barges to be ‘tight like unto a dish?’
You guessed it!
It has something to do with holding your breath under water.
Do you need to be reminded of things to do or not to do sometimes before it finally ‘sinks in?’ I do!!
P.S. I can imagine the Jaredite barges to be in the shape of a Tootsie Roll.

Ether 2:16-17
Packing for a Long Trip
What does your family pack before going on a long trip? Name a few things.
Before Jared and his brother left their homes in Jerusalem with their families and friends, the Lord told them to ‘gather together flocks and seeds of every kind.’ The Lord also told them to ‘prepare a vessel . . . to carry with them the fish of the waters,’ ‘lay snares to catch fowls of the air,’ and to ‘carry with them deseret, which by interpretation is a honey bee; and thus they did carry with them swarms of bees . . . ,’ (Ether 1:41-42, 2:1-3)
Why did the Lord ask Jared and his brother and their friends and families to pack unusual things for their long trip?
They didn’t know how long their trip would be or where to find the land of promise. At first, the Lord directed them to the valley of Nimrod. But the valley of Nimrod was not the land of promise.
They still had a very long way to go.
How many times do you think Jared and his brother, their families and friends asked, ‘Are we there yet?’
Can you define these words? flock, vessel, fowl, snares

Did you think to Pray?
How would you feel if . . .
Your children asked three times for three important things.
You gave them the important things.
After that, your children forgot to talk to you for four years!
That’s what happened to the Lord and his children in the book of Ether.
The Lord answered the brother of Jared’s prayers to
“. . . it came to pass that the Lord did bring Jared and his brethren forth even to that great sea which divideth the lands. And as they came to the sea they pitched their tents; and they called the name of the place Moriancumer; and they dwelt in tents, and dwelt in tents upon the seashore for the space of four years.
And it came to pass at the end of four years that the Lord came again unto the brother of Jared, and stood in a cloud and talked with him. And for the space of three hours did the Lord talk with the brother of Jared, and chastened him because he remembered not to call upon the name of the Lord.
And the brother of Jared repented of the evil which he had done, and did call upon the name of the Lord for his brethren who were with him. And the Lord said unto him: I will forgive thee and thy brethren of their sins; but thou shalt not sin any more, for ye shall remember that my Spirit will not always strive with man; wherefore, if ye will sin until ye are fully ripe ye shall be cut off from the presence of the Lord. And these are my thoughts upon the land which I shall give you for your inheritance; for it shall be a land choice above all other lands.” (Ether 2:13-15)

The Land of Promise
Ether 2:7
“And the Lord would not suffer that they should stop beyond the sea in the wilderness, but he would that they should come forth even unto the land of promise, which was choice above all other lands, which the Lord God had preserved for a righteous people.”
Ether 2:8
“And he had sworn in his wrath unto the brother of Jared, that whoso should possess this land of promise, from that time henceforth and forever, should serve him, the true and only God, or they should be swept off when the fulness of his wrath should come upon them.”
Ether 2:9
“And now, we can behold the decrees of God concerning this land, that it is a land of promise; and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall serve God, or they shall be swept off when the fulness of his wrath shall come upon them. And the fullness of his wrath cometh upon them when they are ripened in iniquity.”
Ether 2:10
“For behold, this is a land which is choice above all other lands; wherefore he that doth possess it shall serve God or shall be swept off; for it is the everlasting decree of God. And it is not until the fulness of iniquity among the children of the land, that they are swept off.”
Ether 2:12
“Behold, this is a choice land, and whatsoever nation shall possess it shall be free from bondage and from captivity, and from all other nations under heaven, if they will but serve the God of the land, who is Jesus Christ, who hath been manifested by the things which we have written.”
Ether 2:15
“And the brother of Jared repented of the evil which he had done, and did call upon the name of the Lord for his brethren who were with him. And these are my thoughts upon the land which I shall give you for your inheritance; for it shall be a land choice above all other lands.”
Why did the Lord repeat his message about a land of promise six times in Ether 2?

Whenever I read the book of Ether, I ask myself this question:
Why did Jared ask his brother to pray for special blessings from the Lord instead of praying to the Lord himself?
Is it because Jared’s brother was ‘a large and mighty man, and a man highly favored of the Lord?’ Maybe Jared was a small person who thought the Lord gave better blessings to those who are ‘large and mighty.’ (Ether 1:34)
No way!
Maybe Jared was just shy about praying and talking to the Lord. Well, some people are shy about talking to the Lord. They might not know talking to the Lord is like talking to your best friend because the Lord IS your best friend!
The answer to my question doesn’t really matter.
What matters is that Jared started out with faith in the Lord and good ideas. He asked his brother to pray for certain blessings that would help their families and friends to survive.
Jared and his brother were like a team. They counted on each other to be strong in their own talents, and the Lord blessed them with answers.
Jared’s faith and ideas, his brother’s prayers and the Lord’s answers were the recipe for Jared, his brother, their families and friends to travel to a ‘choice land.’
The book of Ether tells stories of their adventures thousands of years ago.

Ether 1:33-43
What kind of adventures will you have with faith, good ideas and prayer?
Can members of your family use their special talents to help?
After the brother of Jared prayed, the Lord let Jared’s family and friends keep the same language. Jared didn’t know what to do next, so he asked his brother to pray again.
The brother of Jared prayed again and asked the Lord if they should stay near Jerusalem or find a new place. He asked the Lord to carry them ‘into a land which is choice above all the earth.’
The Lord heard the brother of Jared’s prayer and told Jared to gather flocks, seeds, their families and friends and meet Him in a northern valley. The Lord said, ‘I will go before thee into a land which is choice above all the lands of the earth.’
The Lord said they would be blessed with a great nation in the choice land because they prayed.
I am a child of God. The Lord wants to answer my prayers, and He will.

How many times can children of God pray to the Lord for help?
When God’s children pray, do they always get what they want?
Ether 1:38-43
